About Signs of Freedom: The American Tea Party Message by Stephanie Selene Anderson

Tea Parties are an act of desperation. No one would choose to put themselves through the work, time, and expense of organizing rallies only to worry, “What if no one shows up? What if I’m the only chump out there holding a sign?”

None of us want to use our precious time and resources to attend more meetings, run websites, or fly to Washington DC on a perfectly good weekend for a march. We don’t relish being mocked, misrepresented, demonized, or ignored by the lapdog media.

We don’t want to have to be the bad guys and tell people that real compassion means they have to grow out of dependency and handouts and entitlements in order to be independent. We don’t want to push our own children out of the nest, but responsible parents do. Every day. Yet, here we are, compelled to stump the streets with signs admonishing our fellow citizens to wake up. And grow up.

We’d all rather sleep in. Or get up early to grow our businesses. Or write novels before the kids awake. Instead, we have to defend our children against their potential future as tools in the machine of a tyrannical government. Instead, we have to refresh the tree of liberty.

Hey, none of us are the smartest person in the room! But somehow, we managed to grok the common-sense principles that made our country the first in history to establish freedom and liberty as a backbone for a justice system and a free-market economy. So why is this our problem?! The truth is it’s been our problem for a long time. We’re just getting around to desperate measures. Trust me, we’d really rather be about our own business.

But we’re desperately concerned: Recent political events have become a matter of survival. Our children are being philosophically separated from us. Our President wants to change the Constitution so that government takes primacy over individual rights. We have enemies within and without our borders who want America taken down. Without our Constitution to protect inalienable rights, we will no longer answer to ourselves or to God, but to the state.

For every single person who shows up to a Tea Party, there are, I would bet, hundreds more who want to be there. They can’t or won’t for whatever reason. But more will as time goes on because rational minds grasp the difference between American history and the history of the world; between the American vision of free people who are masters of their own lives and people castrated by their masters.

In fact, the nexus of energy within the Tea Party movement is already delineating the road ahead. Grassroots are pushing up websites and foundations and leaders in many walks of life. And the good news is that it’s fun.

It’s fun to learn more about what it means to be an American. It’s a relief to find you are not alone in your passion for liberty and your common sense viewpoint. It’s invigorating to feel the strength to speak up for individual rights and your children’s future.

For all those reasons, I wrote this book. And for another reason: the visual impact of  small crowded corners growing to millions crowding the streets surrounding the  capitol building in Washington DC inspired me to capture what I could in the pages of this book.

May Signs of Freedom carry its message far and wide to all citizens who will stand for freedom wherever they live.
